DISCOVER LLUCMAJOR WITH MALLORCA PRIVATE TOUR GUIDES-PURE HISTORY IN THE SOUTH OF MAJORCA

This country town, LLUCMAJOR; the largest in southern Mallorca, has a place in history – it was the site of the battle in 1349 where Pere IV of Aragon killed his relative Jaume III to end Mallorca’s time as an independent kingdom.

Jaume’s death is commemorated by a statue at the end of Passeig Jaume III.

Another statue in honor of  Llucmajor’s cobblers ,remembering the traditional shoemaking, which was imperative to economic development in the country.

Traces of human step in Llucmajor date back to the pre-historic times. Caves and settlements such as Capocorb Vell (declared National Monument Award 1931) are the most significant remains of the Talaiotic.

Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman communities had settled along the coast of Mallorca.

Later Moslem built agricultural entities in the area. However, Llucmajor grew up as a village next to the conquest in 1229 when the village was found in 1300.

Llucmajor became from King Jaume II permission to hold a market and plots of land were offered to settlers from the mainland. However, less than half a century later his son Jaime III was killed on the fields west of the town during the famous battle of Llucmajor.

With the death of the ‘Unfortunate‘ began the end of the Kingdom of Mallorca

Work on the village’s original layout, still preserved today in its old quarter, began in 1300 and was based on a geometric plan in the shape of a draughts board.

In 1543 Emperor Carl granted the village of Llucmajor royal permission to hold yearly fairs and weekly market. From September 29th to October 18th, Llucmajor celebrates ‘Fires’ (Fairs). On Sunday previous to the 18th October takes place ‘La Darrera Fira’ (Last Fair), where there are exhibitions of livestock, machinery, crafts and typical local products.

Along the 19th Century, the shoe industry struggled along when Spain lost its overseas trade in the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba following a brief war with the United States of America in 1898.
1916, King Alfonso XIII approved to Llucmajor to entitle itself as a city. The first railway was opened.

The market was revived when the Spanish Civil War started in 1936 and the townspeople made shoes for General Franco’s Nationalist Army. The shoe industry employed most of Llucmajor’s labour market until the 1970s, being today the services and tourism industry the most outstanding.

An honorable mention to Gerónimo Boscana 1776 (Llucmajor)1831 (San Gabriel, California)
During this year 2013 Mallorca celebrates the tricentennial of Junípero Serra’s birth (Petra 1713). He was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1730 and worked as a missionary in Mexico (1767). When Spain began its occupation of Alta California (now California), he joined the expedition and in 1769 founded Mission San Diego.

From 1770 to 1782 he founded eight more missions in California, thereby strengthening Spain’s control of the area. His work earned him the title Apostle of California, and he was beatified in 1988.

In early nineteenth-century,Geronimo BoscanaFranciscan missionary in Spanish Californias and Mexican Alta California, wrote an historical account of the belief, usages, customs, and extravagancies of the Indians around San Juan Capistrano called the Acagchemem Tribe. Under the name of ‘Chinigchinich’ this character has furnished the title for the missionary Boscana’s account of the closely related neighboring Indians of mission San Juan Capistrano, by far the most illuminating and valuable account of the Indians of California that the world owes to the mission period.
