JUNIPERIAN YEAR-PALMA DE MALLORCA-13th APRIL
Mallorca Private Tour Guides wants to remind you that tomorrow Saturday, 13th April in commemoration of the YEAR JUNIPERIANO in Palma de Mallorca, and to remember that 13th April 1749 Father Junipero Serra left Mallorca, his homeland to join Franciscan missions culminating with the foundation of the Golden state of California.
The program of events will be:
10.50 In San Francisco square , Palma Municipal Band will perform a concert.
11.15 wreath at the monument of blessed father Junipero Serra ,in San Francisco square in Palma de Mallorca.
11.30 Mass in the Church of San Francisco with the participation of the Bishop of Mallorca, Monsignor Javier Salinas.
12.15 Speech by local authorities.
Mallorca Private Tour Guides would like to give you some details of the monument of Father Serra , located in San Francisco square in Palma de Mallorca.
The sculpture was made by a sculptor born in 1914 Guernica (Vizcaya), but settled in Mallorca since 1939 called Horacio de Eguía
The sculpture is made of bronze and stone, and it was commissioned by the association Friends of Father Junipero Serra in 1962, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our most international franciscan (1963).
But the realization of this statue was delayed and it was not ready till 1965, and as has happened to many statues in our city, it had different locations, until finally it was settled in its present location, San Francisco square in Palma.
Horacio de Eguia, is a sculptor who has done several Works on our island as the sculpture of Blessed Ramon Llull in Paseo Sagrera , L’espigolera the monument to the writer Maria Antonia Salva born in Llucmajor, located in her hometown,the village of LLucmajor, near the cloister of San Buenaventura, the Roman statues of La Rambla in Palma or Santa Catalina Tomas “La Beata” in Valldemossa close to the house where she was born .
In Cuba ,Havana, in San Francisco de Asis square, 29th April 2005, was placed a replica (used the same mold) of this sculpture of Father Serra and was donated by the foundation Iberostar from Mallorca.
This sculpture commemorates the visit of Father Junipero Serra to Cuba middle of the eighteenth century to the Franciscan convent of Havana.
